Kevin Selkregg

Dewittville, NY

A ceramic materials scientist, Kevin completed his Bachelors degree at the University of Florida and Masters at Virginia Tech; both in geology.  He has published dozens of articles in technical journals around the world in the fields of ceramic and refractory materials.  Over the last several years, Kevin has expanded a hobby utilizing his love for geology by scouring the shores of Lakes Erie, Huron, and Ontario for cobbles and fragments of the ancient metamorphic and igneous rock types of the Canadian Shield and uses lapidary techniques to transform them into coaster sets, pen sets, and votives. Each is unique in their origins, colors, formation, shapes and sizes. Their beauty and function are a testament to the Influence of the glaciers of 15,000 years ago during the last Ice Age which transported the Canadian rock types hundreds of miles south from the Canadian Shield region that encircles the Hudson Bay.  Some of the oldest rocks in the world of nearly 4 billion years old are found in this region and can be found on the Lake shores transported by the very recent event of geologic age – the glacier advances.

Besides Kevin’s work sold at the Grape Country Marketplace; samples can also be found at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield, NY and The House of the Potter.
